An afternoon dress was quite similar to a day dress; however, they were also worn for afternoon visits to others. A walking dress would have a shorter length so it wouldn’t impede its purpose of walking, and it was meant to be seen by others in much the same way as a promenade dress.

“Normal” is very subjective to time period and class. I would say that the common lady never changed her dress throughout the day, the average, wealthier lady changed once (from a day dress into a dinner dress), and the most fashionable and extravagant lady could have changed up to four or five times.
